Group Assignment 1: Enter the Communications Age

To complete this assignment successfully, you should:

  1. Study the assignment carefully
  2. Complete the assignment as directed

The information age has not always proven to be a positive experience for hospitality organizations. The manner in which information is distributed is often misdirected and inefficient. Static information just piles up. On the other hand, dynamic, digital information can empower an organization because it can go where it is needed, when it is needed. The merging of computers and communications has moved us into the Communications Age, enabling the rapid flow of information throughout an organization. Answer the follow questions using the material in chapter 5 and article on page 348 as your primary information resources. Choose one of the group members to write up a final draft of your results and post in your group labeled "FINAL ANSWERS." Please be sure that the names of all group members are listed.

1. If you were CEO of a hotel chain, how would you use technology to facilitate global team building?

2. In today's competitive environment, executives must spend as much time as possible making decisions that are strategic and directional in nature. Consequently, executives are providing lower level employees with more opportunities to make operational decisions. Employee empowerment, made possible through advancements in information technology, allows a corporate executives to concentrate on leadership rather than control. What information technology applications enable the sharing of information throughout an organization? Give specific examples.
