Rules

Rules and procedures provide structure for the classroom. How are they different?

Rules address ethical issues, and address the common good.

They are global and overarching
They assist in the development of a safe learning environment
They apply to everyone in a just community
They express norms or expectations

Tips

Do you currently have rules posted?

What purposes do they serve? keep control
build community
fulfill a district requirement
structure the classroom
provide norms

Did the students help develop the rules?

Do students support the rules?

Would you be interested in student input about the rules?

Do parents know of the rules?

Do the rules apply to everyone equally? To the teacher, too?

As you learn about rules and procedures, revisit your classroom rules and consider updating them.
