Intimacy
in the Classroom
Technique:
Anything that distracts the focus from learning, thinking and reflecting
is out of place. This may apply to clothing which distracts from the learning
environment.
Procedures:
- Provide
a rule and expectation that there is to be no personal contact among
students. This rule applies to aggressive and intimate behaviors.
- Explain
reasoning and have students assist in developing the guidelines.
- Recognize,
for self and students, that feelings of intimacy are powerful.
- Let the
students know that you are not opposed to closeness.
- Discuss
infractions quietly and without an audience.
- If students
are deeply hurt by censure, possible answer may be "don't cast
your pearls before swine." This is precious to you, so donāt do
things that permit others to see it or you in a less favorable light.
Medical concerns: Sex education is controversial, even in districts where
it has been mandated and a set curriculum has been developed. If concerns
arise about student intimacy and there is a belief that a medical issue
exists, please refer to the school or district nurse or counselor. If that
is not a resource, look to the public health department for assistance in
referring students or gaining perspective.
