Organizing Education for Effectiveness
The cognitive domain has been addressed very effectively through curriculum development, assessment, philosophical issues, reform movements, criterion based testing, Bloom's taxonomy and the grading system ... to begin with a few examples. Nevertheless, schools are continuing to receive criticism, business leaders cast doubts and University Education Departments receive accusations despite intensive efforts toward reform. In the struggle to recoup, universities have taught methods more methodically, increased the amount of time pre-teachers interface with children, reexamined criteria, reworked assessment, changed formats for evaluation, persisted in pursing excellence through definition and quantification, and stressed the importance of technology. We can change our effectiveness dramatically if we tilt the kaleidoscope even gently. The paradigm in education has focused on "out-come", and competency. We need simply admit to and teach utilizing the HUMAN factor. The premise of the following materials would radically change education with little outlay in capital. All the work we have done up to now on curriculum, teacher development and evaluation of results could remain in place. With few exceptions those who have been taught to work in education could continue and be instructed and guided in the requisite new skills. Rubric: Cogent, tightly written manifesto of approximately 200 words, articulating personal vision of pro-active discipline and its place in education.
