Lesson Four - Gratitude

A grateful mind by owing owes not, but still pays, at once indebted and discharged. - Milton

Preset:

Write a short letter of gratitude to the students and personally deliver each. An example might be:
    Dear Students:

    Thank you for wanting to learn and for sharing your ideas and questions with me. I feel grateful for your presence. I know you could choose to use your time and money in other ways. Your smiles, support and friendship mean a great deal.

    Your partner on the journey
Development:

Allow time for students to read “The I-I-I Syndrome” by Mary Browne. Discuss the relationship between gratitude and depression. Ask for students to look for other connections. On the board make four categories for expression of gratitude:

people feel better people don’t believe you afraid I’ll be snubbed verbalize it


Let the class discuss these and add to the lists.

Activity:
  1. Write the letters of gratitude.
  2. Make out a sheet of gratitude memos.
  3. Develop a goal to share a sense of gratitude at least once each day for a week. Include an action plan and a means of self evaluation.
Summary:

Share action plans and letters about self if students choose to do so.

Materials Needed:
    Personalized teacher Thank you notes
    I-I-I Syndrome story
    Gratitude Letters
    Gratitude memos
