Activity Three - ABC’s of Group

The ABC’s of group work is a text developed by Dr. Affeld. It has two uses in this course. The first will be a set of self-discovery activities. The second use is to give you activities and suggestions to utilize as you help young people who are having difficulty with socialization, communication, cooperation and leadership. So, as you look through the material you want to make note of methods you might include in your intervention notebook, the final for the class.

You may wish to bookmark this page, since you will be doing an activity each week.

Assignment:

Here is the link for the ABC book. Click here

It is a large download. You have permission to save it and use it in this class and in your work with youth. Browse through the files, reading the different ideas about understanding self and community building.

Once a week, for ten weeks, review one of the ABC topics. The pages are set up with the first page of a topic covering basic information and the second or third page providing suggested activities.

Directions: (Remember, you will do ten of these)

  1. Select the intervention and read that material
  2. Find a partner or a group and try the activities suggested.
  3. Write a very brief critique, including the following:
    1. I learned . . .
    2. I liked . . .
    3. I will probably use this when . . .
    4. This is something you could change in the presentation . . . .

Final activity: After completing ten topics, send a summary response that covers the following requirements.

  1. Identify the topic you felt helped you reflect and grow the most.

  2. Identify a set of strategies - for instance those in Fight/flight – that could be taught to your class with a good chance of success and making a difference in appropriate social behavior or community building.

  3. Take one checklist that focuses on emotional status - for instance depression and mentally review it based on the actions and behavior of a student you currently teach.

  4. Take a checklist that identifies content skills - for instance making meaning (pp.18-19) and try implementing some of the suggestions in your classroom.

  5. Write a review of the material, highlighting the most and least effective sections and how you might implement them in the classroom. Include beliefs about student responses to such techniques, barriers, supports you might need to implement the ideas. Also address how peers, administrators or parents might respond to these approaches to students.
