Oxidation
Oxidation is the increase of bonds to oxygen and the reduction of
bonds to hydrogen.
Alcohols can be oxidized to aldehydes and ketones depending on substitution
and reagent.
Reagents:
- The most common reagent is called "Jones" reagent. Jones
reagent is based on Cr(VI) oxide. CrO3 is not very soluble,
so we usually put it in sulfuric acid to dissolve the reagent. This makes
chromic acid, H2Cr2O7 or "Jones"
reagent. Jones reagent oxidized organic compounds as far as possible.
