Mazurka Op. 17, No. 4 Chopin

Chopin purposefully withheld a strong harmonic closure on the tonic until measure 20. It is interesting to observe the tactics he used to diffuse the impression of tonic. Some of these tactics are noted on the example (the introductory "vamp," treatment of secondary dominants in chromatic sequences, effect of inverted chords, melodic rhythm, the cadences at bars 8 and 11).
