COMPOUND TERNARY
Three-Part Closed Form: A(T) B(R) A(T)
where T = home key and R = relative key.
Types of composition cast in this form:
Gavottes I and II, Minuet I and II; common practice Da Capo forms, Minuet and Trio, Scherzo and Trio
- Each section of the form (i.e., A, B) is a structure with stand-alone properties; a binary,
simple ternary, and so on. B is sometimes an exception.
- Optional Introduction, coda (codetta). Da Capo forms (optional retransition
in B leading to reprise of A )
- Other considerations: transitions and retransitions,
extended ternary (sections more extensive than a binary or simple ternary), optional repeats during Da Capo.
