![]() NAU Cline Library(PH.658.639) In 1905, Joseph E. Maxwell had a fancy job title of "Additional Farmer and a Special disbursing Agent" found a permanent and suitable location for the reservation agency ten miles east of Tolchaco along the Little Colorado River. This new settlement completed in 1908 was called Leupp in honor of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Francis E. Leupp. The facility had a two-story dining room, an apartment building, six cottages, an office building, a hospital, a police station, a 60-foot water tower and a school facility complete with classrooms, dormitories and dining facilities. Later, this new settlement was renamed as "Old Leupp." But the location of the school was unsafe due to floods caused by the Little Colorado River. In 1938 after the BIA facilities received severe damages by the second flood, the school was closed. Within time, the community selected another site on higher grounds for a new school that was completed in 1960 known as Leupp Boarding School. |
