Tackling Your Literature Review

To complete this assignment successfully, you should:

  1. Study the assignment carefully
  2. Respond to each question in the space provided
  3. Fill in your Name and Email address
  4. Send the Assignment

1. Please identify for me a "rough cut" of your topic area, problem statement, research question, etc.

2. Related to the above, please locate at least five (5) sources of prior literature in the area. Traditionally, we think of these as articles published in refereed journals. But, in the broader sense, "the literature" should include dissertations, as-yet-unpublished conference proceedings (e.g., papers distributed presented as part of a conference presentation); and the like.

For each of these, please summarize for me the following:

  1. Title, author(s), year, source (e.g., journal or conference where published; dissertation defended at X College/School);
  2. A brief narrative summary of the contents of this source;
  3. Your specific rationale for including this article -- e.g., how does it fit into the scheme of things regarding your topic?

P.S. You can now also add the preceding into your growing, evolving proposal! You should have rough cuts at this point of the following subheadings (please refer back to the "Doctoral Proposal" handout you got at the outset of our cyber-course!):

Statement of the Problem - from your last (# 2) assignment;
Review of the Literature - for those just getting started here, the preceding five (5) or more article summaries will suffice for now, and even for this course requirement. Of course, if you happen to be farther along (e.g., you've already done papers and/or presentations in other courses regarding your topic of interest), you will have more to summarize under this subheading for your proposal.

This is the way to do it! To add and revise as we go, and eventually you'll find that it "grows out sideways" into a doctoral dissertation proposal!
