As you read in the electronic textbook reading, you should strive to balance the observer and participant roles. To refresh your memory:

The "participant part" implies an immersive experience in a real-world, "field-based" setting. As such it implies that the researcher is holistically committing his/her feelings, thoughts, emotions, etc. to that setting.

On the other hand, the "observer part" is characterized by the scientific approach to knowledge. That implies objective, scientific, neutral, scholarly recording of these data or observations.

1. Observe at least two conversations in the chat room. From your observation, write a one paragraph description of your impressions of the interaction in the chat room. You should observe or lurk for the first part of this exercise.

2. After you have completed the first part, go back into the same chat room and participate in the chat room discussion. Using the textbox below, reflect on whether your impressions altered in any way when you became a participant in the chat room rather than simply an observer. Be specific.
