The Supreme Court may render one of six types of opinions:

3. Dissenting Opinions

The Justices who disagree will write a dissenting opinion, saying that they disagree with the majority decision and the reasons for that decision. The dissenting Justices will give their own decision and their reasons for that decision.

A dissenting opinion must always consist of a minority of the members of the Court who hear a case. A dissenting opinion may be signed by only one Justice, or by as many as four Justices.
