Think about the terms brand awareness, brand association, and brand image. Note how these are hierarchical and that awareness is a simple concept, association is more complex because the brand is related to something else; and image is both complex and somewhat personalized. The brand image I may hold for a specific brand (e.g. Buick automobiles) may be very different from yours.
