Burn-out occurs in places other than university classes. Consumers are bombarded
with thousands of messages each day, many of which never get through our
perception screens. Pay special attention the next time you drive to the store
for the many signs, messages, etc. How many times have you driven the same route
and never noticed these things? You put up a "clutter barrier" to filter out
messages which are not important, so you are not aware of their existence. The
same holds true for advertising. Try to recall the commercials you saw on the
last program you watched. The next time you watch tv, jot down the name of all of
the advertisers in a half-hour show. Notice how many you wrote down as compared
to what you remembered seeing earlier. The difference between these two is the
degree to which you have your own "clutter barrier."
