Welcome to ESE 593 Middle School and the Gifted

This course is designed to cover an introduction to gifted education as it relates to the middle school.

My name is Pat Hays and I am the instructor for this course.

A General Description Of How To Work Through This Course

This course will be presented in a series of four modules. Modules One through Four need to be done in sequence. Module One requires to know how to perform each of the computer tasks required to complete the course. I recommend that you complete Module One as quickly as possible.

Most of the modules will require you to access articles from a web address, access articles from the on-line services of Northern Arizona University's Cline Library and post a response in the Virtual Conference Center (VCC).

This should not be considered a correspondence course. You are required to participate in the VCC in order to receive a passing grade in the course.

Special Notes About This Course
  • Please check the message box each time you log on to the class. I will be using the message box to inform you about problems that may come up related to the class.
  • If you have problems accessing the on-line articles, let me know. My wish is that one of the skills you acquire from taking this course is the ability to use the NAU Cline Library's on-line service to find professional resources. However, if you are not able to access a particular article I can try sending it to you as an e-mail attachment. Or if that fails I can fax a copy to you. So don't panic if you are having problems we can work around them.
  • This course is intended to be the first hour of a three-hour course, which has been divided into three one-hour parts. (Part One---overview of gifted education, Part Two---review of teaching methods for gifted, Part Three---application of teaching methods for gifted).
  • Part One is being offered on-line and must be completed before September 24, 2001. There will be strict due days for assignments to keep everyone on schedule.
  • Part Two will be offered later in the fall and meet three Saturdays (five hours each time) in the Phoenix area. In order to take Part Two, Part One or an introductory course in gifted education must be completed.
  • Part Three will follow with an introductory Saturday meeting in the Phoenix area with most of the rest of the work completed by individual students in their own classroom settings. In order to take Part three, Parts One and Two or an introductory course in gifted education and a methods course in gifted education must be completed.
  • Taking Part One does not require you to take Parts Two and Three.
  • The course with Parts One, Two and Three was designed by four Arizona Association for the Gifted Board members; Dr. Pat Hays, Associate Professor in secondary education at NAU; Melanie Richards, teacher of gifted at Tempe Elementary School District; Dolores Salisz, teacher of the gifted at Paradise Valley School District, and Dr. Susan Stutler, teacher of the gifted at School District.

After reading the opening pages I recommend you read the syllabus for this course. Then move on to Module One.
