Associate Professor of Bilingual and Multicultural Education

Background and Qualifications

  • Born, raised and educated in East Los Angeles, California
  • Cultural background: My paternal grandparents are Yaqui from San Luis, Arizona; my maternal grandparents are Pueblo from Doña Ana, New Mexico. Ethnically, I was raised as a Chicano or Mexican-American.
  • 1960 Garfield High School, East Los Angeles (made famous through the film, "Stand and Deliver")

  • 1970-73 Elementary Bilingual Teacher, Los Angeles Unified School District
  • 1972-73 Adult Education ESL Instructor, Los Angeles Unified School District

  • 1974-76 Education Development Center, Math Content Specialist, "Infinity Factory."
