Notes:
What do all the blanks mean? This is a work in progress, and the web page is pretty much a solo effort. Blanks mean missing information. I will try to fill them in as quickly as time allows. Inactive links mean I can't find the program on the web anymore. Send me an e-mail if you want my attention, particularly if you want to give me some information.
Download help? If you're lucky, your web browser is already correctly set up for FTP (file transfer protocol). Just click on the name of the program you want and you should be directed to a download page for the program or, if there is no web page, the download will begin automatically. If you run into problems, try the Download Help Page or send me an e-mail at the address below. If you want to browse the shareware archives directly, here is a list of Shareware Archives. If you don't have a program for decompressing archived files, get Stuffit Expander; another great product. It's free!
Download Links: Whenever possible, I will point you to the web page of the application which is hosted by the author, since this is likely to be the most current source of information on the program. If none exists, I will direct you to the shareware archive where I found it.
Ratings: 1=poor, 2=fair, 3=good, 4=very good, 5=excellent. My rating system is based on ease of use, value as a teaching tool, and my overall impressions of the app. I tend to rate more ambitious programs higher, but even a tiny program that does its thing very well can get a good score. In most cases, programs with a score below 3 will not be listed unless that application fills a content area void.
Registration: Fees are listed in U.S. dollars unless otherwise indicated. Read the license agreement for each application to obtain all the details. Please support shareware. This is great stuff!
Processor: 68k refers to the Motorola 680x0 chip series (including 68000, 68020, 68030, 68040), fpu refers 68k machines with a floating point unit (also known as a math coprocessor), PPC refers to the Motorola PowerPC chip (601, 603, 604, and G3, G4) found in "PowerMac" computers, "fat" refers to applications with both 68k and PowerPC code in one version of the application.
Operating System: 68000 series Macs should run System 6.0.8, which was the final version of System 6. 68020 machines should run System 7.1, and 68030 machines can run System 7.1 (or 7.5 if they have enough RAM and hard disk space). 68040 machines perform best with System 7.6.1, which was the final version of System 7. PowerMacs based on the 601 chip perform well with System 7.6.1 or 8.1, while machines based on the 603 and 604 chip run best with System 8.6. G3 and G4 machines can run OS9. OS/Processor Matrix
Limitations: E= Program eventually expires preventing further use unless fee is paid. D= Some features are disabled until Registration fee is paid. R= Persistent reminders to pay shareware fee.
Comments? If you find a broken link or a program you'd like me to add to the list, send a message to Larry.MacPhee@NAU.edu
