1. Read the Archaeopteryx story (in the link provided in the lesson) to find out about the significance of finding this fossil. What characteristics do Archaeopteryx and reptiles have in common? What characteristics do Archaeopteryx and birds have in common? Is this another case of a "missing link" found? Explain. 3 points.

2. Use fig. 30-2 to determine when birds made their appearance on earth. Note when Archaeopteryx and the Pterosaurs are found. 1 point.

3. What is a penguin? Can a bird have a keeled sternum but not fly? Explain. Give four examples of ratites. 2 points.

4. Explain how "beaks and feed" can be used as clues for determining habitat and nutrition. Give two examples to support your response. 1 point.

5. How would researchers test a bird to see if the sense of taste is developed? How about smell? If it is offensive to humans, does this qualify as the standard? Defend your response. 3 points.
