New "< BR >" inspector extension for Dreamweaver 3 |
| HTML has a line break tag for people who don't want to separate by paragraphs. It is also used for forcing breaks in text wrapping around graphics.
Macromedia Dreamweaver 3's implementation of this BR tag ends with the former, and users have to manually edit the tag to support the latter. Dreamweaver 3 is a highly user extensible application, but requires a strong knowledge of JavaScript (and some XML) to harness its potential in this field.
Technically speaking I am writing software modules which integrate seamlessly into the product. This was a deeper education into the inner workings of DW3. My practice run was a separate object (for the Objects palette) for the missing "BR clear=all" tag which also involved integration into DW3's Insert menu. As an improvement on the general idea, I rewrote it as an inspector (a floating palette that inspects/changes values), to allow the user to examine a BR tag and change its value.
Both were uploaded to Macromedia's own Exchange site, where developers share these extensions to DW3's functionality. Developers have the option of submitting these extensions for approval by Macromedia (putting their stamp on its usefulness/safety); while most don't, I did and both were approved (5.5.00) | |
