Bruce Palmer suggested that the myLibrary framework could be repurposed for instructors of web courses who want to collect germane research resources in one place for students.

This is a more complex version, aimed at instructors and/or subject specialists and required overcoming some hurdles (most notably querying two databases at once from different datasources, which is apparently impossible in Oracle, ColdFusion, Perl, etc.). My objective is to do as little data sifting in CF as humanly possible for easier maintenance (i.e., SQL does the data sifting, CF manages the interface).

Short term work ahead: Account creation pages, authentication mechanisms, adding custom links to any category (not just Related), adding deletion of custom links to add/drop pages, More About These Resources... pages and matching databases, addition of government resources to database.

Long term work ahead: Mining Data Warehouse for course information on page creation/admin edits instead of instructor entering it freeform.

Project has been viable for over a year now, with multiple tweaks and improvements. Most notable:

  • Conversion to CSS-based layout
  • alphabetic integration of master database and custom links
  • help/reference resources now culled from master database
  • courses can be cloned for multiple versions

Remaining to be completed:

  • migrate databases from current development space to production space, simplify certain routines collating tables
  • Non-alphabetic ranking ordering
  • alternative course id schema consistent with other web class resources
  • Complete internal documentation
