To complete this assignment successfully, you should:

  1. Study the assignment carefully.
  2. Complete the assignment as directed.

Now that you have read the "academic" definitions of culture, read the book Ishmael for a more global perspective. Reading Ishmael takes about 3-5 hrs. PLEASE DO READ THIS VERY IMPORTANT BOOK---cover to cover! Your responses to the following activities will reflect whether or not you have read the book.

After you have read the book, open the link below to the Ishmael web site and explore what others are doing with this book!

Ishmael

Once you have finished the book, and have visited and explored the web site, discuss your insights with your classmates in the VCC entitled," Ismael Insights." Post your immediate comments on any issue or concept or idea. Please read and react to others' comments on the VCC.

Then, address the following questions:

1. Describe the voice of Mother Culture. What is it, how does it communicate, and what does it tell us? Where in your own life do you hear the voice of Mother Culture? (Post on VCC, "Voice of Mother Culture.")

2.On page 41, Ishmael gives the student a list of definitions. He defines culture as "a people enacting a story." Describe your own culture's story. Is it a Taker story? A Leaver story? How does it see itself in relation to the rest of the community of life, to the natural world? (Post on VCC, "Taker/Leaver Story.")

3. As a teacher, how and what about this book would you present to your children, that is, your own students? How and what would you teach? Explain (Post on VCC, "Teach your Students.")
