HP570 : The Class : Observation

Module 4: Observation, Evaluation, and Implementation of CSH

Purpose: The purpose of this module is to have the students observe and evaluate a school health program and make recommendations for improving the school health program.

At the end of this module, students will write a capstone paper for the course.

The School Health Index (downloaded from CDC website as part of required course materials),is a useful tool in evaluating the CSHP components of physical activity, healthy eating, and a tobacco free lifestyle in a school.

Objectives:

  1. Observe a school health program by conducting an interview with a school principal and/or other individuals who have the information needed. If you are currently working in a school setting, please evaluate that school.

  2. Evaluate a school health program to determine the extent to which it meets the characteristics of a quality CSHP as outlined in the text Health is Academic and the CSHP web site, and other related sites. If the necessary school personnel are available to obtain the information needed to complete the Healthy School Index, use it as a key evaluation tool.

  3. On the basis of an interview and evaluation of a school health program, make recommendations on how the school could improve its health services and programs to more closely follow the guidelines of a quality CSHP.
