Electronic Commerce Trends in the Tourism Industry

  • 99% of Internet users took a trip of 100 miles or more away from home in the past year

  • Nearly one-half of all Internet users are frequent travelers, who took five or more trips in the past year

  • The number of travelers using the Internet for travel planning and other purposes jumped from 29 million in 1996 to 70 million in 1998.

  • Travelers spent 3.2 billion in 1999.

  • 6.7 million American adults have used the Internet or online service to make travel reservations in the past year.
