Discovery Techniques and Heuristics

Using the situation for Tom Johnson or Fred Smithson in The Writing Process Lesson, take a document through all three stages of the writing process until you have a final version, supplying any "facts" as needed. Follow the step-by-step instructions below:

1. First practice a discovery technique for the Tom Johnson scenario (computer accounting problem) here. First, please identify which one (Free-writing or Listing) you are doing first.

2. Now do an heuristic for the Fred Smithson scenario (new road controversy) here.
(Use either the pentad or particle-wave-field). First, please identify which one you are doing.

3. Next make a rough draft of a memo or a report here (choose either the Smithson or the Johnson scenario).

4. Type your revision here:


Your work will be worth 100 points, and graded on the following criteria:
Grading Criteria: Writing Process
Pre-writing: Shows understanding of free or list writing 5 pts. 50 pts.
Pre-writing: Shows understanding of the use of an heuristic device (either the pentad or particle-wave-field). 15 pts.
Draft: Shows awareness of audience, purpose, and stance. Shows developing organizational pattern 15 pts.
Revision: Shows changes from draft including graphic representation. The revision will also be graded according to the four C's as delineated below. 15 pts.
Clarity: Clearly Defined Purpose, Adequate Factual Support for Purpose, Clear and Appropriate Organization, Clear Sentences 15 pts. 50 pts.
Conciseness: Presentation that is long enough to get the job done, Effective Language 15 pts.
Coherence: Logical Patterns, Argumentative Patterns, Other Organizational Forms that create a flow for the document appropriate to audience, purpose, voice 10 pts.
Correctness: Appropriate Use of Standard Formats, Proper Grammer, Mechanics, and Other Conventions 10 pts.
