Prewriting: activities that the writer does BEFORE actually writing the piece. These are things such as defining the situational triangle; gathering relevant facts and information to put in the piece of writing; and determining the best form to use to get the job done.

Drafting: using the materials generated in the prewriting phase to write up an initial draft of the piece of writing.

Rewriting: after letting some time go by, making changes and corrections to the initial draft of the piece of writing.

Revising: making large overall changes to the initial draft of the piece of writing, such as changing the organizational pattern or adding a new section of data.

Editing: making small mechanical or grammatical corrections, such as fixing spelling errors or writing more concise and effective sentences.
