Rural Inclusive Special Educators (RISE)

NAU is working in a consortium with rural Yuma area LEA’s  ( Antelope School District, Crane School District, Hyder School District, Gadsden School District, Parker School District, Quartzite School District, San Pasqual School District, Somerton School District, Yuma Elementary School District, Yuma High School District, and Welton School District ) and the Arizona SEA.  All of these rural districts enroll high numbers of ELL students. 

GOAL

Prepare 20 rural Instructional assistants (paraprofessionals) for each cycle to become teachers Who can effectively serve ell students & ell students with disabilities via Coursework for A B.S. in Elementary (k-8) & Special Ed (k-12) degree, ESL endorsement, Professional Development, & linking with mentor teachers.

Objectives of the Program:

Three cohorts (20 students x 3 = 60 total) of pre-service teachers (paraprofessionals) will complete a 78 credit hour program, resulting in completion of all coursework for a Bachelors Degree with a Dual Major in Elementary and Special Education and ESL endorsement.

Courses are scheduled from 4:30 to 9:00 pm Monday through Thursday and/or weekends.
