Learning Disabilities from a Personal Perspective

One of the dangers of learning about specific disabilities, the definitions we use, characteristics of persons who have this type of disability, and intervention methods that are available, is that we lose the person in the avalance of information. We begin to loose sight of the fact that this is an individual who may show some of these characteristics or may need some of these interventions. Unfortunately, the more knowledge you have about a disability, the more you tend to view children as more similar than they are different. I think this is a grave mistake.

First, let's test your perceptions. What famous people have/have had a learning disability?

Famous People with a Learning Disability

In this activity, I am going to send you to several web pages that give personal accounts of learning disabilities, tell you about how children with learning disabilities respond to their disability, or contain work (poems, short stories, etc.) written by people with an LD. Read these stories and written work then answer the questions below.

Web Sites:

Feelings of children and adults with learning disabilities

The creative, artistic side of learning disabilities

Learning disabilities and sibling relationships (personal perspective)

My life with dyslexia (personal perspective)

In the space below, indicate what you learned about people with learning disablities from doing this assignment.

What themes do you recognize from our earlier units (e.g., "Beyond Affliction", Mild Mental Retardation, Emptional or Behavioral Disorders)?

Approximately how long did this activity take to complete?
