Learning Disabilities

In this the third topic for the Students with Mild Disabilities module, you will learn about children with learning disabilities (LD). Specifically, you will examine:

      • the major definitions we use,
      • the number of children who are eligible for services under this category,
      • the characteristics of children with learning disabilities,
      • assessment considerations, and
      • current research about the the etiology of learning disabilities

Objectives:

  1. Be able to operationalize the definition of "learning disabilities" (i.e., discuss the features of the definition)
  2. Indicate the number of children with learning disabilities who are attending public schools.
  3. Discuss specific assessment considerations when determining if a child has a learning disability.
  4. Discuss the characteristics of children with learning disabilities.
  5. Review current research on the causes of learning disabilities.
