In your lessons you have seen that adaptive behavior is a critical part
of the definition of mental retardation. This criterion was introduced
to prevent the "six-hour retarded child" so frequent
during the early 1970s.
The construct of adaptive behavior has recently come under increased scrutiny.
Many claim that it is a fuzzy, poorly defined construct. For example,
look at this fact:
Given the normal, bell shaped distribution of intelligence, if IQ alone
were used to determine mental retardation, 2.28% of a population of people
would qualify. In our schools, approximately 2.3% of children qualify
as having mental retardation.
The question becomes are we measuring the same behaviors in IQ tests that
we are in adaptive behavior scales?
