Orthopedic and Health Impairments

This is the final topic in the "Students with Mild Disabilities" module. In this topic you will learn about orthopedic impairments (OI) and other health impairments (OHI), two more diagnostic categories under IDEA. This topic will review:

  • the general categories of orthopedic impairments
  • the more commonly identified types of orthopedic impairments
  • the most commonly identified types of other health impairments
  • the common characteristics of children with orthopedic and health impairments

Objectives:
  1. Be able to define orthopedic and health impairments (i.e., discuss the features of the definitions.
  2. Be able to identify specific conditions for both orthopedic and health impairments and discuss the general characteristics of that condition.
  3. Review some of the more commonly observed characteristics of children with orthopedic or health impairments.
