FAQ's ...ask Detective Lizzie

HELP! I am not staying focused . . .

This course is set up to allow you to make progress at your own rate. If you have never felt in charge before, this is the ideal time to savor that experience.

Need more definition about due dates? See the syllabus for suggested due dates.

Need someone to share ideas and check on the assignment? Try WebCT. Lizzie will be lurking there to chat with anyone who needs to feel connected to others in the course.

HELP! I want to learn this in a classroom. There is a course offered at NAU each semester. You may want to drop this section and add another. You must do this within the NAU registration guidelines.

HELP! I don't know what to do next. Why not drop an email to the professor? Janne.Ellsworth@nau.edu

Lizzie says she is helpful and will give you a burst of energy if you are looking for a little nudge. Remember, if you take too long getting started, you will not get the helpful comments on your assignments. Ask yourself, what feelings do I have about learning? What fears might be lurking that keep me from working? You can fill out the following check list. If it does not help you, it may help one of your students sometime. We get "stuck" or lack motivation for a reason, or a lack of one. We may fear doing the wrong thing, or appear "stupid." Sometimes, things are familiar and seem too much like review. What kind of experiences did you have to make risking or running at new things seem like a bad idea? If material is familiar, do you know how to think more deeply, more incisively and reflectively about the content?

Reflective statements I am using to stop my own progress. . .

I may do something dumb. I can't get it by myself. I don't read well.
I am not good at computers. I want to talk to someone about it I don't feel safe.
What if I do it wrong? I am uncomfortable with novelty. I am too busy!
This makes me think too much. I feel like I don't have any control here. I hate school!
I can't get used to reading on the computer screen. I just want to listen to a lecture and take notes, not learn new skills. I don't know what the teacher wants.
If I do it at the last minute and it gets a bad grade, I will have a built in excuse. If I turn it in at the last minute, she won't have time to grade it. What does this have to do with teaching anyway?
This is just busy work I already know all this stuff. This is too hard.

. . . and the answer I will give myself so I get recharged and focused on the course again.

Remember to ask the professor for support if you need it. Already know "all this stuff" and "This is too hard" belong to both of us, so let me help with a solution. Janne.Ellsworth@nau.edu
