Writing Assignment

Now that you have a working understanding of the 4 Cs, I am going to ask you to apply what you know. In this assignment, you will compose one of two parts of a job-seeking package, a resume. Make this something you will be able to use. Think of a company that interests you, and a position in this company that you would like to hold.

As you are writing this, there are a few things I want you to keep in mind:

A. Put as much as possible in block format. Avoid prose sections unless absolutely necessary. Use phrases, and be sure to break the entries up with white spaces, headings, and other graphic effects to make each item stand out individually.

B. Outside of material that must be arranged chronologically, try to place your strongest supporting material first and weaker items later. For instance, if your main qualification is educational, list your education early in the resume. If your main qualification is work experience, list vocational experiences before educational ones. Lead from your strengths.

C. The resume must be concise. It may take more than one page, since it is more important to give a full picture of your relevant experiences and qualifications than it is to be brief.

D. The resume must be neat and correct in every detail. It may be typed attractively in a word processing application, or printed professionally.

E. The four major areas to include are personal, education, vocational, and references.

1. Personal: Include such things as height, weight, health, marital status, etc. Provide information about yourself and your life style if you are comfortable doing so. You might list a few hobbies or interests here. This section is best when brief, and may also be placed last in the resume.

Remember the 4 Cs and take a few minutes and draft the personal section of your resume here.

2. Education: List all of your college or university schooling, starting with the most recent first and going back to list your high school by name and city. You can list any specific post-high school courses relevant to the job. Most employers are also interested in any special honors you achieved at school, as well as involvement in school clubs, athletics, service organizations, etc.

Draft the education section of your resume here:

3. Vocational: List your work experiences in reverse chronological order. Important items to list for each job include the following:
Dates you held the job
Exact title of the job
Duties (be as specific as you can)
Name of supervisor
Be sure to use a block format rather than a long section of prose the reader can easily skip over. Other items you may want to include are your salary and your reason for leaving the job.

Write the vocational portion of your resume here:

4. References: List three to five people whom you have asked to write letters on your behalf. You should provide an exact address for each reference, so that the prospective employer can contact these people if he wants to. the references should be from as wide a range of backgrounds as possible. Former teachers and former employers are good choices. (Be sure the person you ask can give you positive recommendations.)

Write the reference portion of your resume here:

5. Now, cut, paste, and edit the four parts that you have written above, and create your complete resume in the space below.
