Assignment:
Think about the company that interests you, and the position that you would like. Write a letter of application for this position, following this format:

A. The first paragraph should contain two points:

1. Tell how you learned about the job. Many employers spend a lot of money advertising their job openings. They want to
know which ads are doing the job and which are not. If you know of a good name to drop, this is the place to do it,
without overdoing it.

2. Make specific application for a specific job. The employer wants to know exactly what you think you can do for him.

B. The second paragraph is the longest one in the letter. It has one function, to elaborate on your pertinent qualifications. In this paragraph you literally convince the prospective employer that you have had the experience to do the job that she needs done. Also, you convince the employer to examine your resume.

C. In the third and final paragraph, you request some specific action by the prospective employer. You may request an interview or further application materials. The point of the letter is to get an interview. Rarely do employers hire straight from the letter and resume. Employers use these as screening devices. They use these to refuse most of the applicants and to offer interviews to the few they consider serious contenders for the job.
