Ma'ii - Coyote
Subject Area: Science Wildlife Classification: Earth Grade Level: 5th

Objective(s): Student will be able to:

1. Identify the wildlife classification of coyote.

2. Categorize animals as predators and/or preys.

3. Describe significant cultural connections (beliefs).

4. Describe the role of the coyote in reference to balance of nature.

5. Debate positive and negative effect of coyote due to loss of livestock.

6. Write a coyote story.

Materials/Resources:

Pictures, posters, scissors, books on coyotes, films, videos, internet research

Procedures/Activities:

1. Show and have students identify the classification of coyote.

2. Introduce vocabulary; predator and prey. Display picture and posters of animals.

3. Show film or video of the coyote and summarize. Show coyote films (October through February) and discuss.

4. Group students and discuss stories and experience to formulate a story about the coyote.

5. Students will share stories to compare and contrast.

Evaluation:

1. Write a summary of film or video viewed.

2. Write a coyote cultural story.

Cross Curriculum/Subjects/Extensions:

Diné Culture: Identify term "ma'ii" and other characters in coyote stories.

Math/Science: Draft a form or graph to determine number of coyotes seen and number of animals lost by family and relatives.
