Dloo - Prairie Dog
Subject Area: Science Wildlife Classification: Earth Grade Level: Kindergarten

Objective(s): Student will be able to:

1. Identify and name the prairie dog in Navajo and in English.

2. Identify and label the body parts

3. Identify and compare the prairie dog's habitat, its food and its characteristics, including cultural beliefs with other small animals.

4. Learn songs about prairie dog.

Materials/Resources:

Pictures and posters of skunk, scissors, books on skunks , films, videos, internet research, charts, magazines and community resource people

Procedures/Activities:

1. Read books on prairie dog and have students draw pictures of a prairie dog and label body parts .

2. Introduce simple vocabulary words to work with on stories; prairie dog , ears, eyes tail, fluffy, furry, white, brown, gray , jump, run, spray, smell, eat, sleep, live and other simple words that will complete the lesson at the kindergarten level

3. Show pictures, posters, and videos of other small animals. Discuss similarities and differences.

4. Create a collage of a prairie dog using various materials.

5. Take a walk or a field trip to the zoo.

6. Using magazine cut up pictures, create a puzzles of a prairie dog and write a short story.

7. Learn a song in English and Navajo about prairie dog. Suggestion: Diné Shoe Game Song-WINTER ONLY)
