Subject Area: Science Wildlife Classification: Water Grade Level: 7-8

Objective(s)--Student will be able to:

1. Classify the different types of ducks.

2. Identify and distinguish the ducks of the Diné Nation

3. Discuss the cultural aspect of duck.

Materials/Resources:

Paper, pencil, pen, books on ducks or article of ducks on Diné Nation, pictures of different types of ducks, map of the Navajo Nation with lakes.

Computer, World Book Multimedia encyclopedia

Cultural consultant

Procedures/Activities:

1. Introduce classification and order: Ares and Anseriformes, Anatidae

2. Introduce different kinds of ducks:

Dabbling

Pochards,

Perching Sea

Stiff-Tailed, etc.

3. Make a classification chart with characteristics

4. Do a written report with an illustration

5. Listen to cultural presentation and do a follow up report on the usage of duck feathers and the use of meat as food.

Evaluation:

Check information on classification chart

Check written report for correct information

Cross Curriculum /Subject/Extension:

1. Language Arts / Read additional books on ducks.

2. Technology-Do an inter net research to compare and contract ducks from different geographical areas.
