Tsilaghaah - Waterdog
Subject Area: Science Wildlife Classification: Water Grade Level: Fourth

Objective(s): Student will be able to:

1. Identify and name waterdog by its Navajo and English name.

2. Classify amphibians into two groups: a. Toads/Frogs b. Salamanders

3. Research on the food, habitats and characteristics of salamanders

Materials/Resources:

Books, posters, pictures of salamanders (waterdog), video/film, computer (internet) a set of encyclopedias, community resource person

Procedures/Activities:

1. Introduce vocabulary words in Navajo and in English, (Waterdog-tsilaghaah, frogs-ch'al, water-to, mud-hashtlish, and others that will complete the lesson at fourth grade level).

2. Mini research on various types of waterdogs.

3. Show a video on kinds of waterdogs and draw to show part s of a waterdog.

4. Students collect information through reading materials and internet.

5. Students give oral report.

Evaluation:

1. Check for students participation and feedback.

2. Check journal entries for research information

3. Students give oral reports
