It is important to review some of the authorities in the field to get a firm sense of the societal expectations we have for teachers and schools and the questions being asked in court. It is also vital to know what a district determines as policy and position when working with youth who are exhibiting behaviors that keep learning from occurring. It becomes a question of safety when a student engages in actions that are threatening, that hurt the teacher or endanger students. In the past decade, decisions about what is best have been mixed.
It is critical for each teacher to be clear about the following:
Teachers need the strong support for self that comes from understanding and
possessing documents that explain these rights.
In this module you will search out and build a file that contains snippets of the law, good internet sources for finding the actual wording when needed and court cases that may have implications for classroom practice.
To conclude that study, you will then build a brochure for parents, explaining
their rights and the rights of youth being served by your district. It will
be in simple language and serve two functions. It will help you put a frame
around your own findings and help parents feel supported and less uncertain
of their rights.
