May 4, 2002 There was a mistake in the settings of the final exam. If you have already taken the exam, you will need to take it again. No need to e-mail me with the fact that you are taking it again. The deadline will be extended until 11:55PM on Tuesday, May 7, 2002. Sorry for the problem. Dr. Pinto

April 30, 2002 The course evaluation is now active.

March 5, 2002 After reviewing the brief contents of the 5th and the 6th editions of
"Operations Management" by Heizer and Render, the only chapter titles that
differ in the two editions are as follows:
Chapter 4 in 6th Edition is Chapter 5 in 5th Edition
Chapter 5 in 6th Edition is Chapter 6 in 5th Edition
Chapter 6 in 6th Edition is Chapter 4 in 5th Edition
Chapter 6S in 6th Edition is Chapter 4S in 5th Edition

I do not have 5th Edition with me, but I expect the contents of the chapters
in the two editions to be substantially the same. Besides, the home work
problems assigned in the POM module of the course are self-contained on the
course website itself. As such I expect the 5th edition would suffice for this
class.

If you still have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me
know. Dr. Rakesh Pangasa

March 4, 2002 Welcome to Production and Operation Management, the second Module of BA 501, which begins today! I hope by now you would have familiarized yourself with the seven topics in POM Module and the related reading assignments, on-line activities, homework assignments, and the deadlines for assignments. For your convenience, I have identified all these in the attached file: "POMSchedule2002.doc" (the schedule is also found below in the course calendar). As you may notice, the first homework assignment comprising six problems is due for submission on Monday, March 18, 2002. If you need any clarifications or additional information, please do let me know. Please continue to name your Excel files as in the first part of the course. For example for the TQM topic 1 in the POM module, Mr. Jones would name his file POMHW1Jones.xls. In addition please continue to put BA501-your last name-assignment ID in the subject line of your e-mail. Good Luck! Dr. Rakesh Pangasa.

February 20, 2002 Key to Practice Midterm Exam. Link to the Practice Test. Answer none of the questions. Submit the exam. The next page you will see is "Answers: Practice BA501 Midterm Exam- Statistics." This is the key to the exam. Use File-Print in your browser to print the key.

February 17, 2002 If you are having trouble reading some of the math symbols at this web site, you will need to have the True-Type fonts symbol (two font files here in a zip file ) installed on your computer. Install the fonts by going to Start-Settings-Control Panel-File-Install Fonts. First, you will need to unzip this symbol.zip file to a directory on your PC, then navigate to these font files when you install them.

January 29, 2002 For those of you who would like to do extra work using the Kvanli text, I have a recommendation. I would suggest that instead of doing exercises in the text (which have answers to half of the excercises in the back), that you use the solved examples in each chapter as a study guide e.g. Example 5.6 on p. 177. Cover up the solution and see if you can solve the problem. This way you will receive instant feedback to the correct way to solve the problem.

January 28, 2002 Problems with KGPAddin- I have installed the KGP addin on with Windows2000 and Office2000 without problems. After you have run the program from the CD-ROM, open Excel. On my computer, I do the following: Tools-Addins- browse on C: to find C:\kgp_excel_macros. Select kgpanaly.xla. The KGP addin should now be on the list of addins under Tools-Addins in Excel. Check the box next to KGP addin. You may get an error which states that the proper addin file can not be found. "Do you want delete the KGP entry?" Answer "no" but the addin should then appear on the menu bar of Excel anyway. You may also use Windows Explorer (file manager) to find kgpanaly.xla. Double-click on this file. If it is working, Excel should open and you will be asked if you want to enable macros. Answer "yes." The KGP Addin for Excel found with the text CD-ROM may be used, but it is not a requirement. All of the Excel topics are illustrated with the assumption that they can be worked without the KGP Addin, but the KGP Addin makes some of the assignments easier to do

January 28, 2002 The web links found with each topic are not graded. They are there for you to explore. The Self Test found with each topic are not graded. They will help you prepare for the midterm and final exams.

January 25, 2002 The KGP Addin for Excel found with the text CD-ROM may be used, but it is not a requirement. All of the Excel topics are illustrated with the assumption that they can be worked without the KGP Addin, but the KGP Addin makes some of the assignments easier to do.

January 23, 2002 Several individuals registered for BA501 have not turned in the assignment for topic 1 in the statistics module by the deadline. For this first assignment only, no points will be deducted if the work is received before the homework for topic 2 is due. Starting with topic 2, 10 points will be deducted for every day the work is late. We have a full semester with homework due almost very week. It is in your best interest to keep up with the assignments. If you find that a web course really does not fit with your time schedule or learning style, the I would suggest that you drop the course. We will help you in anyway we can. Please direct questions about any aspect of the course and homework to the BA501 e-mail address found below at the bottom of this page.

January 23, 2002 Please name the Excel files you send in the for homework assignments to identify the assignment and your last name. Here is an example of how Mr. Jones might name his file for topic 1 of the statistics module: StatsHW1Jones.xls.

January 15, 2002 The textbooks for this course are available from the NAU bookstore.

January 14, 2002 The use of WebTutor with the statistics module is optional (not required).

January 14, 2002 Do not use third party e-mail accounts to send me messages or to send in homework. Use the WebMail links found at the bottom of every page of this web site. WebMail requires the use of your DANA accuont or JAN account. Please reference "BA501 (last name) Assignment number" in the subject line of your e-mail. If you are using an internet service provider (IPS) and their e-mail, please have your DANA e-mail forwarded to your IPS account. Send all messages and homework to BA501@mail.cba.nau.edu

January 14, 2002 Welcome to BA501!! In order to be successful in this Web course, you will need to be self-motivated. Without the in-class clues provided by weekly attendance in a physical classroom, you will need to take responsibility to keep up with all assignments and exams on your own. We are here to help you and facilitate learning in every way possible. Please e-mail (preferred) or telephone during office hours with any questions, concerns and help solving problems. Use the Virtual Conference Center to post questions to help each other solve homework problems and/or prepare for exams. If you are on campus, please visit us during hour office hours. See the course calendar for assignments which start today. Be sure to read all of this message.

The assumption is made that you have a working knowledge of the Microsoft Office 97 spreadsheet Excel 97 and word processor Word 97 (or the same for Office 2000).  Instructions will be given for any specific assignment, so you do not need to know the all the features of the software.  All Word and Excel documents found at this site are saved in the formats for Word 97 and Excel 97 and will open in Office 2000. You must have a copy of this software or be able to use a NAU lab where the software is installed. Instructions will be given for any specific assignment, so you do not need to know the all the features of the software. You must use a browser with javascript capabilities.  In general, Internet Explorer 3.0 and above along with Netscape 3.01 and above will work.  The latest version of either of these browsers should be used when possible.  They can be download free in most cases. The web site is view best on Windows 95 or above. You will need to have the True-Type font symbol (here in a zip file ) installed on your computer (most Windows PC have it already).

For examples for how to work problems (in addition to the examples provided on-line), please refer to the Kvanli. In each chapter, you will find worked examples with solutions over the majority of topics covered. The homework assignments are not found the the textbook, they are on the web site under the topic being studied. For example for topic 1, click "Class" then "Statistics" then "Descriptive Graphs." On this web page you will find on-line lesson, activities and "home work." Follow all instructions on the home work page. When you send in homework as a attachment to WebMail or GroupWise be sure to rename the Excel file to reflect your name and the assignment. For example, Mr. Jones would rename the first assignment "JonesStatsHW1.xls"

If you do not have a DANA account, please create one as soon as possible and e-mail me the account username. Send me an e-mail now so that I can get your return e-mail address. Also include your permission for the posting of grades to the the Web by the last four digits of your student ID number or by a substitute number. Please reference "BA501 (last name) Assignment number" in the subject line of your e-mail. If you are using an internet service provider (IPS) and their e-mail, please have your DANA e-mail forwarded to your IPS account.

It is recommended that you use NetScape 4.7x (not 6.x) to view this site and open files in Word or Excel. Internet Explorer 5.x may give you an error message such as "Enter Network Password" or "Please enter your authentication information." Click "cancel" and the file should open.

You may install the Excel add-in which comes with the Kvanli text at anytime. The CD is in the back of the textbook. It can be used for any assignment, but its features are most useful for Topic 6, Hypothesis Testing. You must have your own PC to install the add-in.

Here is how you can plot a normal distribution using Excel. Put the Z scores -3.5, -3.4. -3.3 .... 0 .... 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 into a single column. Then in the top cell of the 2nd column use the Paste Function-Statistical-NormDist command where x = the cell reference to the first Z score, mean = 0, stdev = 1 and cumulative = false. Copy this cell next to all the other Z scores. Now use the Chart Wizard- Scatter Plot- and select the one with smooth lines. You want the Z scores on the horizontal axis and the 2nd column of numbers for the vertical axis.
