Emotional and Behavioral Disorders
In this topic you will learn about children with emotional and behavioral
disorders. The topic is arranged a little differently from the earlier
topic on mild mental retardation. In this topic we will look at specific
conditions that result in a diagnosis of severe emotional disturbance.
Rather than separate out information about characteristics, etiology,
and interventions, I have included them in each online lesson. At the
conclusion of this topic you will be asked to apply your knowledge to
a case study of a child with a severe emotional disturbance.
Objectives:
At the conclusion of this topic, you should be able to:
- Define "severe emotional disturbance," "anxiety,"
"depression," "conduct disorders," and "schizophrenia."
- Discuss information about the relative prevalence and incidence
of emotional and behavioral disorders in our schools and our communities.

- Review the characteristics of children with various emotional and

- Discuss various treatment approaches for children with emotional
and behavioral disorders.
- Apply your knowledge about emotional and behavioral disorders to
a case study.
